Remembering Philip Johnson
Architect Philip Johnson, who died at age 98, defined modernism and transformed the urban landscape in the United States. Johnson is perhaps best known for the "Chippendale" topped AT&T Headquarters (now owned by SONY) in New York City and Robert Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Johnson's other buildings include the Transco Tower (now known as the Williams Tower) in Houston, the Glass House in Connecticut, and (with Mies van der Rohe) the Seagram Building in New York. Johnson had his critics, however, and there was a decidedly dark side to his personality.
