"The house hasn't been vinyl-sided yet, but I'm thinking of it," the owner writes. "The wood is very very dry and sucks up and peels paint like it's a banana malt, and cedar siding is pretty darn expensive." Any ideas?

I’m probably too late in commenting, but how about cement siding? I have it on part of my house. It doesn’t peel, doesn’t need to be painted, and has the great benefit that it doesn’t look cheap or fake like vinyl.
