Frank Lloyd Wright's Plan for Baghdad

Tuesday July 13, 2004
When Frank Lloyd Wright was over 90, he visited Mesopotamia and conceived a grand scheme to build an entirely new city on the plain between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Now, the plans are being dusted off by architects who would like to rebuild the fallen city according to Frank Lloyd Wright's vision.

Wright's plan for Baghdad included museums, parks, gardens, shopping complexes, an opera house, and a new campus for Baghdad University. His designs were inspired by Islamic and pre-Islamic images, but they were widely derided. Today, however, some architects would like to resurrect Frank Lloyd Wright's unused plans.

• Read about Wright's plans for Iraq in Scotland's International online newspaper, The Scotsman.
• Find more about plans to resurrect Frank Lloyd Wright's Baghdad plans in the Wall Street Journal
• Visit the All-Wright Site for lots of great illustrations of Wright's proposed buildings.
