A New Look for Freedom Tower at Ground Zero
Wednesday December 17, 2003
Over the past ten months, architects and planners have been tweaking Daniel Libeskind's plan for the future World Trade Center site. In Libeskind's original plan, the centerpiece was a silvery tower with an angular spire. Skyscraper architect David M. Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill worked (or, according to many news sources, "feuded") with Libeskind over the plan, creating a much-revised Freedom Tower that will have electricity-generating windmills, a network of cables, a 276-foot spire, and an antenna that may reach 2,000 feet. As originally planned, the total height will be 1,776 feet, symbolizing the year of American Independence.
