Taipei Tower: World's Tallest?

Saturday October 18, 2003
Tapei Tower - Photo courtesy of Turner Construction If you've turned on the news, you may have seen reports about the 508-meter tall Taipei 101 Tower in Taipei, Taiwan. According to CNN and other news media, the nearly completed Taipei Tower will rank as the world's tallest building. But wait! Skyscraper buffs often disagree on whether features like flagpoles, antennas, and spires should be included when measuring building height. The Taipei Tower's claim to fame is a 60-foot spire, symbolic of Taiwan's native bamboo plant. What do you think? Is it "fair" to count the spire? And if so, why isn't Canada's 553.33 meter high CN Tower included in the rankings?
